Sources and coverage
NFHS 2025–26 participation survey, printed page 59: all 50 states and D.C. Youth outside high school, territories, adults and fans are outside this table.
State-summary boys/girls sums differ from national reported boys/girls totals by 2,274 entries each; combined totals reconcile. Values are preserved as published.
Census Vintage 2025: July 1, 2025 resident estimates for all 50 states and D.C., including residents aged 6–17 and 18+. Puerto Rico has a total estimate here, with no age/sex extract. State totals reconcile with the independently published population file.
Age/sex population describes residents, not sports participation. It includes households and group quarters. Census source sex categories do not define an athlete’s identity. Age 18+ is a demographic grouping; it does not change platform eligibility rules.
Census ACS household age counts are survey estimates. No margin of error is stored in the current place index, so small-community estimates should be treated cautiously.
Named territorial locality counts and the American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and Virgin Islands totals use the 2020 Census. They are historical counts. Puerto Rico’s regional total uses the 2025 estimate; some newer barrios and subbarrios have no matched count.
American Samoa’s Census and Visitors Bureau lists do not capture every community name. We also use USGS geographic names, AS-EPA and the National Park Service. Mapped communities are labeled separately; historical settlements are excluded. Complete local coverage is still being checked. Guam’s names follow its Mayors’ Council.
Atauloma and Lepua also appear in published local code. These older texts support names, not a claim that their administrative boundaries are current. Additional names receive no inferred population, athlete count or property valuation.
The 2026 Census geography reference supports name search for all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, including active governmental towns and townships. It is not a list of every everyday community name and has no population counts. Location suggestions use the closest reference point, not a village boundary. In the four island territories, only uniquely matched, non-historical USGS map points within plausible territory coordinates are eligible; missing or ambiguous points remain excluded. County labels for repeated place names use the county containing the published reference point, not a claim about the entire place boundary.
Some Census areas differ from everyday community names. Puerto Rico’s current Planning Board map lists 902 barrios; this index has 901 named Census barrios, with reconciliation pending. Northern Mariana Islands and Virgin Islands Census areas are not complete directories of every locally recognized village or neighborhood.
